For the support person who wants to help but feels out of depth

Support people often carry two burdens at once: concern for the person they love and insecurity about whether they are helping well. That second burden can quietly turn into overthinking, self-criticism, or controlling behavior.

You do not need perfect insight to be supportive. You need consistency, humility, and the willingness to learn.

What helps most

  • Listening longer than feels comfortable
  • Asking what would be useful instead of deciding for someone
  • Supporting the person in front of you, not the version you wish things were

The goal is not to become an expert overnight. It is to become safer and steadier over time.
